It all starts with an idea

A hospital room with two empty hospital beds separated by medical equipment, monitors, IV stands, and a rolling cart. A large clock is on the wall above the beds, and there are medical devices and supplies on tables and counters. Curtains are on the right side of the room, and sunlight is coming through the window on the left.

Independent Practice,

Through clinical experience, I have learned how to independently assess, diagnose, and manage complex health conditions, as well as those that require multidisciplinary treatment plans. I possess the ability to think quickly and critically, and I can confidently state that upon completing my clinical hours and educational requirements, I will be able to practice independently as a Family Nurse Practitioner.

Leadership.

I have gained experience over the years as a charge nurse, nursing preceptor, and clinical educator. I have had the opportunity to mentor nurses and lead multidisciplinary teams in group assignments that require advanced planning and leadership skills. I believe in strong open collaboration between all roles to promote optimal patient outcomes.

Your Questions, Answered

“Can you describe a challenging clinical situation you faced during your rotations and how you handled it?”

A patient presented with advanced diabetes who was non-compliant with medications and consistently had elevated HA1C levels due to resistance to lifestyle modification. I took the time to speak with this patient, spending two hours alone in this room, to set small goals for daily routine modification that were achievable for the patient. On the next visit, the patient returned with a lowered HA1C by 3 points. I reinforced the accomplishment with encouragement and praise. The time spent setting individualized goals significantly improved the chances of achieving lasting, positive outcomes.

“How do you handle situations when you are uncertain about a diagnosis or treatment plan?”

Compassionate care that is based on facts and evidence is my first priority. When faced with a situation in which I am unsure of the proper steps to proceed, I follow current clinical guidelines by consulting resources such as UpToDate and Supervising Mentors for recommendations. Collaboration with fellow providers who are experienced in the field and utilization of research resources ensure I provide the safest and effective treatment strategies for continuous positive patient outcomes.

“Why did you choose this specialty and what are your long-term professional goals?”

This field of practice enables me to establish a solid foundation, which is essential for providing comprehensive care to patients in a rural community. I am passionate about providing the best care possible to my patients and want to pursue further certifications in the near future in psychiatric medicine, nutritional health, and education to promote a wider range of access to the knowledge I have gained.

Technology

I have gained experience with various electronic health record systems (EHRs) and medicine dispensing systems. Epic, Cerner, and Meditech, as well as all the various charts, are the central systems with which I have experience. At Epic and Cerner, I have achieved Super User status, with experience in installing their systems on hospital computers for an organization coming online.

I utilize technology to ensure accuracy in my education, as well as for documentation and care completion. In the future, as a provider, I will maximize the capabilities of informatics and technology tools to identify trends related to health promotion, care improvement, and positive healthcare outcomes.
